A towering quick bowling all-rounder, Jason Holder has always been seen as a cricketer of great potential. His 6ft 7 inch frame does rather bely his more pedestrian bowling speed, but Holder has developed a reputation as an accurate, canny bowler.
He made his Test debut at Bridgetown against New Zealand in 2014, making a half-century in the Test. His first Test century came against England in 2015, when an unbeaten 103* in the fourth innings of the match helped Windies keep the tourists at bay, the game ending in a draw with the hosts seven wickets down. As a bowler, 2018 has been a breakthrough year for Holder, with three of his four five-wicket hauls in Test cricket coming in this calendar year. 11-103 against Bangladesh was an excellent contribution from the big man at Kingston, helping to seal a 2-0 series win for the Windies.
Holder has long been earmarked as a leader, and was appointed ODI captain after Dwayne Bravo, making him the youngest Windies ODI captain ever. Later that year he captained the Windies to the 2015 World Cup, before becoming Test skipper in September of the same year, the second youngest ever for the Windies. An articulate speaker, he has grown into the role of all-format captain, and will hopefully lead a resurgent Test side over the coming years.
In March 2021, Jason Holder passed on the baton of Test captain of the West Indies to Kraigg Brathwaite.
