Born on November 20 1991 in Jamaica, Jermaine Blackwood is an attacking middle-order batsman, who has played 27 Tests with an average of 30.09. With a high backlift and desire to take on the bowling, Blackwood has had mixed returns at the top level so far. His sole Test century to date came against England in 2015, during Blackwood’s sixth Test. His unbeaten 112* in the first innings came with the side as a whole being dismissed for just 295, and no other West Indian batsman passing 50. That series has certainly been the high point for the Jamaican so far, as his performances in the third Test (85 and 47* in the first and second innings) saw him take his first and only Player of the Match award.
With a distinctive swagger at the crease - as shown by the fact he swatted Trent Boult for six off just his second ball in Test cricket - Blackwood is widely expected to be an excellent T20 batsman, but he is yet to pass 50 in the shortest format. His commitment to his method is as much a part of his game as the style itself; his assertion of “That's the way I play, skipper” when questioned about his approach is one of a number of memorable quotes from the young man.
