UWI VC XI GO DOWN AFTER ROOT, ROY HUNDREDS

CAVE HILL, Barbados – UWI Vice Chancellor’s XI crumbled to a 171-run defeat, after EnglandTest captain Joe Root and opener Jason Roy warmed up for the imminent One-day International Series against the WINDIES with hundreds on Sunday here.

Several Vice Chancellor’s XI batsmen, mostly members of West Indies Super50 champions Combined Campuses & Colleges, got starts without carrying on, as they were bowled out for 200 in 43.5 overs, chasing 372 for victory, in the One-day, List “A” tour match at the Three Ws Oval.

Left-hander Nicholas Kirton hit top score of 37, Kyle Corbin and Amir Jangoo both made 35, and Keron Cottoy got 25, but the VC XI batting was undermined by Adil Rashid, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood, all of whom grabbed two wickets.

Apart from a 53-run, second-wicket stand between Corbin and Jangoo, there were a string of small partnerships that brought some respectability to the VC XI’s total.

Earlier, the VC XI’s bowling came under pressure, as Root hit the top score of 114 and Roy supported with 110 to lead a powerful batting performance from England.

Leg-spinner Yannick Ottley captured 2-64 from seven overs, but England built on a 129-run stand between Roy and fellow opener Jonny Bairstow.

After Ottley bowled Bairstow in the 19th over, Root arrived and anchored the rest of the batting, sharing 57 with Roy, 57 for the third wicket with Ben Stokes and 58 for the fifth wicket with Moeen Ali.

The five-match ODI series with the WINDIES opens on Wednesday at Kensington Oval. Start: 11 am (local time).
