West Indies again failed to come to grips with the spin of India and went under by a big margin on the third day of the opening match on Friday. India’s legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took seven wickets and left-arm spinner Rajendra Jadeja grabbed two as the visitor record the victory in the final session

Alick Athanaze made the top score of 28 for the second time in his debut on home soail and Jason Holder was not out on 20, but Ashwin was outstanding with 7-71 from 21.3 overs and match figures of 12-131. The hosts were bowled out for 130 in their second innings.

“I just think we let ourselves down with the bat (in the first innings), scoring only 150, we knew the pitch was going to get drier and spin more, and so that first innings total was not good enough,”

West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite said.

“What disappointed me most was that I did not get any runs. I think in this team I have to lead from the front – and that’s my job. I really have got to do better. In the first innings, one or two dismissals, especially at particular times, wasn’t good for us. We were getting the partnership just before lunch, and we lost a wicket the ball before. There were situations in the game at times when we lost it – but for me, I think as a senior guy you know I’ve got to lead the way.”

The Player of the Match award went to India’s debutant opener Yashasvi Jaiswal who made 171 before he was caught behind off Alzarri Joseph in the morning session.

The two teams will now travel to Trinidad for the second match at the Queen’s Park Oval, starting on Thursday 20 July. This will be the historic 100th Test match between the two teams.
