Trinidad and Tobago’s Red Force batsman Jason Mohammed slammed the first century of the 2024 West Indies Championship as his team took on defending champions Guyana Harpy Eagles at Conaree Cricket Centre in St. Kitts.

Winning the toss and batting first, Red Force lost early wickets when Veerasammy Permaul and Ronsford Beaton took. Four wickets between them. Mohammed and Amir Jangoo shared in a 56-run fourth wicket stand to take Red Force to 88-3. Tion Webster joined Mohammed and the rebuilt the Red Force Innings, with a 115-run partnership before Webster fell for an even 50. Mohammed soldiered on bringing up his 12th first class hundred, to finish the day unbeaten on 100, with him at the crease is Vikash Mohan on 20 not out. Red Force closed Day 1 on 215/4. Beaton finished with figures of 12-2-39-2, while Permaul had 25-12-40-2.

Over in Warner Park, home team the Leeward Islands Hurricanes were bowled out for 137 by the West Indies Academy. Jeremiah Louis played a patient innings, top-scoring with 45 off 122 deliveries, while Terrance Warde was the next top-scorer with 28. Joshua James’ pace was too much for the Hurricanes as he picked up 3/11 from 7 overs, which included 3 maidens. Ashmead Nedd had the next best bowling figures for the Academy with 2/3 from 10.1 overs, with 7 maidens. In their reply, West Indies Academy closed Day 1 on 60/2. Rashawn Worrell (13) and Kadeem Alleyne (2) were the batsmen out. Mbeki Joseph 30 not out and Ackeem Auguste 15 not out saw their team to the close of play. Jeremiah Louis 1/12 and Colin Archibald 1/3 picked up the two Academy wickets to fall.

Across the Caribbean Sea at Sabina Park, home team Jamaica Scorpions were stung by the Windward Islands Volcanoes on Day 1, who bowled them out for 159. Scorpions’ wicketkeeper Romaine Morris 35 and allrounder Peat Salmon 26 were the top scorers, as their team struggled against the Volcanoes bowlers. Ryan John picked up a fifer to finish with figures of 13-0-43-5 and Shamar Springer was back in the wickets in first class cricket with 10-2-53-3.

Salmon and Abhijai Mansingh combined to take the two Volcanoes wickets to fall before the close play. Mansingh accounted for Volcanoes skipper Kimani Melius for 31 and Salmon picked up Jeremy Solozano for 26. Johann Jeremiah 66 and Sunil Ambris 30 were the not out batsmen at the end of Day 1, as the Volcanoes closed on 157/2.

No play was possible on Day 1 at Chedwin Park in the clash between Barbados Pride and the Combined Campuses and Colleges due to a waterlogged field.
