Born in August 26 1981 in St. Michael, Barbados, Tino Best was an explosive fast-bowler who played 25 Tests for the Windies. He took 57 wickets at 40.19 in Test cricket. He also played 26 ODIs and 6 T20Is for the Windies.
Despite being a sharp bowler who offered plenty with the ball in hand, Best is perhaps most remembered as a Test cricketer for his exploits with that bat. In particular, the 95 (112) that Best made against England at Edgbaston in 2012 was a world record score for a No.11 in a Test match. Forming a massive final wicket partnership with Denesh Ramdin, Best’s knock was wonderfully attacking, and the closest that any No.11 had come to scoring a Test century. The match was also the only one where Best was given the Player of the Match award, in recognition of the remarkable achievement.
As a bowler, Best’s high point came against Bangladesh in 2012, where he took both of his career five-wicket hauls. 6-40 in Dhaka helped the Windies record an away series win, backing up 5-75 in the previous Test. Best is also known widely around the world as being involved with one of the funniest sledges of recent times. After a few mighty slogs against Ashley Giles at Lord’s in 2004, Andrew Flintoff advised Best to “mind the windows”. The very next ball, Best was dismissed trying to hit Giles out of the park. Incidents such as these have all added to Best’s charm as a cricketer, making him one of the most likeable members of the generation of Windies players.
