West Indies win thriller! Still hopes of World Cup semi spot

Hayley Matthews again led from the front with her second Player-of-the-Match award in a row as West Indies beat Pakistan in a last-ball thriller. The skipper made 20 at the top of the order and grabbed two crucial wickets as West Indies secured their second victory in three days and have kept their hopes of a semi-final spot alive.

Following their win over Ireland on Friday night, West Indies brought momentum into this match. They batted first and made 116-6 with a topscore of 30 from opener Rashada Williams, who added 33 with Matthews. Shemaine Campbell made 22, to help Campbell added a further 40 for the second wicket, but West Indies skipper from 90-3, they scored just 25 runs in the last four overs.

In the second half, Matthews was again the game-changer with excellent figures of 4-1-14-2. The match came down to the final over with Pakistan needing 18 to win. Shamilia Connell conceded three boundaries, but bounced back with a wicket off the penultimate ball, to effectively seal the victory.

Matthews said:

“It was good to bring momentum from the last game. We did what we had to do and if a couple of results go our way, who knows? It is just so exciting the young players coming in and it is going to be an exciting journey just watching them grow. It has been brilliant to see them.”

The win took West Indies to third spot in Group 2 on four points behind England and India.
