West Indies aim to rebound in 2nd One-Dayer as series moves to Melbourne

The stage is set at the Junction Oval in Melbourne, where West Indies Women will look put in an improved performance against Australia Women in the second One-Day International of the three-match series.

Following the defeat in the first match at Allan Border Field in Brisbane, West Indies went back to the nets and have regrouped ahead of Thursday’s must-win contest. First ball is 10:05 am (7:05pm Wednesday Eastern Caribbean/6:05pm Jamaica).

The absence of captain, Hayley Matthews was certainly felt as the team struggled with the bat in the first ODI. Matthews, who is among the best players in the world, was rested as a precautionary measure. She has been doing training and batting in the nets since arriving in Melbourne and a decision on her selection in the playing XI will be made on the morning of the match.

Rashada Williams, the effervescent wicket-keeper/batter noted that despite the defeat they remained in good spirit. She said:

We just have to click into the habit of focus and backing ourselves and our abilities to get things going … so, we’re just ready to go out and execute.

The series forms part of the ICC Women’s Championship. As the countdown to the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in India begins, the winners will be awarded points when they secure wins and therefore the West Indies are keen to secure points to ensure an automatic spot in the marquee event.
