T&T, Guyana and USA open Women’s Rising Stars Championship with big wins
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Home team Trinidad and Tobago started their title pursuit of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) U19 Women’s Rising Stars Championship with a 138-run victory over the Leeward Islands at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
Sent in to bat first, T&T posted 164-2 from their 20 overs, thanks to half-centuries from openers Shalini Samaroo 63 and Shinelle Sawh 53 not out. Samaroo smashed her 63 from 49 balls which included 12 boundaries, while Sawh had four boundaries in the 56 balls faced. Djenaba Joseph added a quickfire 21 off 17 balls, with four boundaries. Samaroo returned with the ball to clean up the Leewards batters, finishing with 2.1-2-0-4, as the Leewards were all out for 26 in 12.1 overs.
Guyana defeat Barbados by nine wickets
Sent in to bat first, Barbados could only post 65-3 from their rain-reduced 15 overs. Zaliya Campbell 17 (27 balls, 3x4) and Asabi Callender 12 not out (18 balls, 1x4, 1x6) were the leading batters for the Bajans. Bowling for Guyana, Niveena Ramnauth finished with best bowling figures of 3-0-3-2, followed by Realenna Grimmond with 3-0-13-1. In Guyana’s reply, Naomi Barkoye led the batting with 25 not out, which came off 38 balls and included four boundaries, while skipper Ashmini Munisar ended on 14 not out, off 24 balls with two fours as they reached 63-1 in 10.4 overs.
USA sweep past Jamaica
The USA handed Jamaica a seven-wicket defeat in the second match of the opening day. Winning the toss and electing to bowl first, the USA stifled the Jamaica and limited them to 49-5 off their 20 overs. The USA then knocked off the total in 11.2 overs, reaching 53-3.
