Solid batting hands Red Force lead after John’s superb five-for

Some solid btting by the middle and lower order helped Trinidad and Tobago Red Force to a handy first innings lead over Windward Islands Volcanoes on the second day of their West Indies Championship match at Grenada National Stadium, on Wednesday. Half-centuries from keeper Amir Jangoo, as well as allrounders Tion Webster and Terrance Hinds rescued the visitors from 82-5 to reach 315 all out in their first innings and secure a lead of 73 runs.

The left-handed Jangoo top-scored with 86 while Webster struck 79 and Hinds, 52, ensuring Red Force rallied in the face of seam bowler Ryan John’s outstanding spell of 5-18 off 14.1 overs. It was his career best bowling figures on his home ground, to better the previous of 4-26.

In their second innings, Volcanoes reached 62 without loss with Kimani Melius unbeaten on 39 and Jerlani Robinson on 20 not out.

At Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua: Leeward Islands Hurricanes batted all day after winning the toss to reach 163-6 against Jamaica Scorpions from a full 90 overs on the opening day of their first round match.

Hurricanes got a top score of 40 from captain Jahmar Hamilton who struck seven fours off 102 balls while opener Montcin Hodge made to 37 from 170 balls from three fours and a six.

Two partnerships held the innings together. First, Hamilton and Hodge put on 59 for the fourth wicket to dig the hosts out of a hole at 40-3 and when the innings slumped to 117-6, Rahkeem Cornwall o his 30th birthday and Jeremiah Louis rallied their side in an unbroken seventh wicket partnership of 46. Cornwall will resume Thursday on 29 not out and Louis on 17 not out.

At Sir Vivian Richards Stadium: opener Matthew Nandu hit an unbeaten half-century on debut as Guyana Harpy Eagles batted all day for 205-5 against defending champions Barbados Pride.

The 19-year-old left-hander struck nine fours off 219 balls, putting on 30 for the first wicket with Chanderpaul Hemraj (11), 45 for the third wicket with Kemol Savory (25), 46 for the fourth wicket with captain Leon Johnson (26) and 37 for the fifth with Anthony Bramble (20).

Nandu ensured Harpy Eagles closed well by posting a further 42 in an unbroken sixth wicket stand with Kevin Sinclair (28 not out).
