Red Force Divas batters blaze to win over Leewards

Trinidad & Tobago Red Force Divas recorded a six-wicket win against hosts Leeward Islands in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Women’s T20 Blaze on Thursday afternoon at Warner Park.

It required some top-quality batting from Shunelle Sawh and Britney Cooper, as the more experienced Trinidad & Tobago team recached 121-4 after the Leewards made 120-5 off their 20 overs. Sawh, the West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 batter, led the way with 26; Cooper the experienced T20 World Cup winner made 21 not out, and Shalini Samaroo, made 20, and T&T at Warner Park.

Cooper struck the winning run with 14 balls remaining when she drove a delivery from off-spinner Amanda Edwards to long-off for a single to hand the Trinidadians their second win of the tournament.

T&T were 48-1 at the end of the powerplay after Reniece Boyce was caught at deep mid-wicket off pacer Kimberley Anthony in the fourth over. They slipped 62-3 at the halfway stage after Sawh was caught in the covers off spinner Jenison Richards in the seventh over, and Edwards bowled Djenaba Joseph for 14 in the 10th over. Later Samaroo came to the crease and dominated a stand of 31 with Cooper to keep Trinidad and Tobago on track before she was caught at mid-on off leg-spinner Lizel Liburd with 28 needed from 35 balls.

Earlier, experience seam bowler Kirbyina Alexander took 2-15 from three overs, and legendary off-spinner Mohammed bagged 2-21 from her allotted four overs, and T&T restricted Leewards after they were asked to bat first. Divya Saxena led the way for the Leewards with 37, Jahzara Claxton got 36, and Edwards added 26 in the strongest batting performance in the tournament from the hosts.
