Leaders Guyana face Windwards in duel to highlight second round
Action will resume on Wednesday in the second round of the West Indies Championship four-day first-class tournament with three matches scheduled to be played in Antigua and Grenada.
Defending champions Barbados Pride will look to rebound when they face Jamaica Scorpions at the Coolidge Cricket Ground; while at Sir Vivian Richards, home team Leeward Islands Hurricanes host Trinidad & Tobago Red Force. Over at the Grenada National Stadium, Windward Islands Volcanoes will feature against front-runners Guyana Harpy Eagles.
The Guyanese were the only team to win in the first round when they had a big victory over the Bajans. Now they have travelled to the Spice Isle and skipper Leon Johnson expects the same intensity for the second contest. The match will see the two century-maker from the opening round, Kimani Melius, who made 192 for Windwards against Trinidad & Tobago and Matthew Nandu, who made 126 for Guyana on his first-class debut.
“It is always good to start on a winning note and to get a win against Barbados is something special. In a tournament such as this it’s vital to start well and carry that positive approach right throughout. We will look to continue in a similar vein as we did in Antigua and carry the momentum,” Johnson said.
Speaking ahead of the match Windwards skipper Alick Athanaze said:
“the mood in the camp is very good. We have finetuned what is required and everyone is aware of what the requirements are. Home advantage if always good. We understand the conditions here and we will be aiming for more success.”
