Benoni, South Africa – Half centuries from Joshua Da Silva (55 not out) and Jason Holder (58 from 64 balls) were the highlights on a day where the West Indies batted all 89 overs.  The day started with the South African bowlers restricting the West Indies from scoring freely, before Thando Ntini picked up the crucial wicket of opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul. Raymon Reifer came to the crease and played a patient knock alongside skipper Kraigg Brathwaite, until the latter fell in the 28th over of the day to left arm Smangaliso Nhlebela.  Reifer then had to retire hurt, as he was feeling unwell.

Devon Thomas (21 from 36 balls) was Nhlebela, being bowled. Jermaine Blackwood then fell, bringing Reifer back to the crease, he however didn’t add much more to his tally before being bowled by Corbin Bosch for 38 from 120 balls.

With the score at 124-5 Holder joined Da Silva and the pair added 98 for the sixth wicket. When Holder was caught and bowled by Bryce Parsons, Roston Chase came to the crease and continued the free scoring, hitting two fours and two sixes in his knock of 30 (29 balls). Bosch then picked up his second of the day, with Alzarri Joseph edging to the keeper.  Shannon Gabriel then came to the crease and supported Da Silva until close-of-play, facing 20 balls and scoring three runs in the process.

The second day’s play is scheduled to start at 10am (4am Eastern Caribbean/3am Jamaica). West Indies are using the match as part of their preparations for the two-Test series against South Africa, which starts on 28 February at SuperSports Park in Centurion.
