Coach: Warm-up helped as we prepare for first Youth ODI
West Indies Rising Stars Men’s Under 19s team had their first taste of action in Sri Lanka on Friday when they faced the Sri Lanka Cricket Select Under 19 XI at Colombo Cricket Club. The West Indies lost by three wickets in a close contest in the warm-up match ahead of the Youth ODI series against Sri Lanka Under 19.
A half-century by allrounder Nathan Sealy was topped by an unbeaten 84 from Sapun Wadage that led the hosts to victory. Sealy struck two fours and two sixes in the top score of 54 from 71 balls before the visitors were bowled out for 227 in 48.2 overs in the 50 overs-a-side.
Sealy returned to bowl a good spell of 10-0-31-0 with his left-arm spin, and pacer Deshawn James took 2-32 from six overs to lead the West Indies bowling, but Wadage hit nine fours a one six from 105 balls to lead a successful run chase for the home team.
Head Coach Rohan Nurse said:
“All the players got an opportunity to practice their various roles in the game. It was the first time that they had played as a team and in these conditions as well and they were many teachable moments. The focus was to have everyone involved as well as given enough opportunities before we travel to Dambulla for the first ODI on Sunday.”
The match will be the only contest before starting a series of three Youth One-Day Internationals against on 27 and 30 August and 1 September 1 before they play two four-day Youth Tests at the International Cricket Stadium in Dambulla.
The opening match on Sunday starts at 10am local time (12:30am Eastern Caribbean/11:30am Jamaica).
