Cariah gathers 100 before Leewards thump T&T

Yannic Cariah struck his fifth first class hundred but off-spinning all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall grabbed two of the last four wickets to fall as Leeward Islands Hurricanes defeated Trinidad and Tobago Red Force by 187 runs on the final day of their third round West Indies Championship match on Saturday.

Resuming the morning at the Diego Martin Complex on 143-6, Red Force were dismissed before lunch for 271 in their second innings, to taste their first defeat of the ongoing 2022 edition.

On 36 at the start, the left-handed Cariah made exactly 100, an innings requiring 180 balls and nearly 4-¼ hours, and including 13 fours. Test pacer Jayden Seales hit a lively 33 at Number 10 but captain Cornwall proved incisive, finishing with 4-50 to ensure Red Force’s resistance did not last beyond the first session.

Cariah and Bryan Charles (21) stretched their seventh wicket stand to 48, frustrating Hurricanes’ push for an early breakthrough. Starting the day on six, Charles faced 70 balls in 1-½ hours at the crease and counted two fours before edging a defensive stroke behind off Cornwall.
