Mohammed destroys Pakistan again
Kingstown, St Vincent, CMC – Another spectacular bowling spell from Anisa Mohammed swept West Indies Women to an 89-run victory over Pakistan Women in the second One-Day International on Tuesday.
Mohammed followed up her five for five in the first match, with five for seven from 10 overs, as West Indies Women successfully defended a victory target of 176 at the Arnos Vale Multiplex.
The result meant that West Indies took an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the four-match series, following their eight-wicket victory in the first ODI on Sunday. The third match will be played on Thursday at the same venue.
West Indies captain Merissa Aguilleira hit a career-best 71, and Shanel Daley made 42, helping the hosts to recover and reach 175 for nine from their 50 overs.
The hosts were put on the defensive though, when Javeria Khan scored 21 and fellow opener Rabiya Shah, one of two changes to the line-up, got 16, getting Pakistan off to a steady start with a 40-run stand. But the drama started to unfold, once Aguilleira introduced Mohammed. The right-armer struck with her first delivery, removing Javeria Khan to spark a slide which saw the last nine wickets fall for 36 runs.
Nain Abidi (3) fell to a catch at the wicket off Mohammed at 50 for two and with just one run added, Marima Iqbal and Rabiya Shah both fell without scoring off successive deliveries, to leave Mohammed on a hat-trick. There was no coming back from 51 for four, however, as West Indies continued to dismantle Pakistan, sending them tumbling to 86 all out.
Earlier, West Indies started poorly after being sent in to bat, and needed Aguilleira and Daley to bail them out with a 73-run, fourth wicket stand. Prolific opener Stafanie Taylor fell for two with the score on eight in the third over, caught at mid on off fast bowler Asmavia Iqbal.
Juliana Nero (17) and Daley then patched up the innings with a 35-run, second wicket stand before two wickets fell in quick succession. With the score on 43, Nero missed a sweep at a straight one from leg-spinner Sana Mir and was lbw and two runs later, Deandra Dottin slapped left-arm spinner Sadia Yousuf (2-27) to backward point to depart without scoring.
Aguilleira then struck six fours off 102 balls while Daley counted five fours in her 72-ball innings, as they repaired the innings and fashioned a competitive total. When Daley departed caught at backward square off leg-spinner Bismah Maroof (2-31), the innings went into decline with off-spinner Nida Dar (2-35) chipping in to help restrict the hosts.
