Canada tour -- coach speaks

TORONTO, Canada -- West Indies Head Coach John Dyson said he was happy with the way his players looked during their first full outdoor training session in Canada. The team used the opportunity to prepare for the opening encounter in the tri-nation series which also features Canada and Bermuda.

Speaking from Toronto, after Monday morning’s three-hour outing, Dyson said the players had acclimatized well since arriving and all “looked eager” and excited to be on the field of play again.

“The guys acclimatized quickly to the temperature and the conditions. Everyone looks comfortable at the moment. The nets went smoothly and I would have to say we feel good to be here in Canada. We went through today’s session without much bother. The players got a chance to be out in the centre and to get fit and ready and into 50-over mode,” Dyson said.

The Windies will have their opening match against Bermuda on Wednesday at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club. The other team is Canada and the West Indies meet them on Friday. The two best teams will qualify for the final on Sunday.

“We are looking to play good cricket out here. We are looking to beat them both (Canada and Bermuda) and move on to the Champions Trophy.”

The coach added that the series would be used as preparation for the International Cricket Council’s Champions Trophy, slated for Pakistan from September 12 to 28. The West Indies have been drawn alongside Australia, Pakistan and India in the preliminary round.
“Before the Champions Trophy we have these three matches up here and two warm-up games in Pakistan (against Sri Lanka and New Zealand). So we have 5 matches to tune-up as a team and get totally ready and focused on the Champions Trophy,” Dyson said.
