Windward Islands score big win over Guyana
GEORGETOWN, Guyana -- The Windward Islands pulled off a sensational victory over Guyana by three wickets with two balls to spare in the third round of the West Indies Cricket Board’s One-Day Tournament on Saturday.
Heavy rain caused the match to be reduced to 27 overs per team and Guyana rattled up a challenging 172 all out off 26.2 overs. In a brilliant reply, Windwards reached 174-7 off 26.4 overs. The victory was sealed by Kevin James who smashed the only ball he faced out of the ground for a big six.
The win was set-up by left-hander Devon Smith who made a fluent 63 from 65 balls at the top of the order. He received excellent support from Darren Sammy, who hit a brisk 38 from 36 balls in a partnership of 85 for the fourth wicket. Johnson Charles also made a big contribution hitting two sixes in 27.
Earlier, slow bowler Liam Sebastien who took 5-28, to earn the Man-of-the-Match, award, and pacer Nelon Pascal (4-33) restricted Guyana. Travis Dowlin (59) and Royston Crandon (54) rescued the home team with a partnership of 113.
The other matches slated for Saturday Jamaica vs United States at Everest and Trinidad and Tobago vs Canada Uitvlugt were called off due to heavy rain. The tournament resumed on Monday with Barbados vs Leeward Islands at Uitvlugt, Canada vs Jamaica at Bourda, and Trinidad and Tobago vs United States at Enmore.
