Springer named as Assistant Coach for Champions Trophy 2009
JOHANNESBURG -- Henderson Springer has been named as Assistant Coach of the West Indies Team for the ICC Champions Trophy to be played in South Africa later this month.
Springer, a former Barbados allrounder, previously worked as Coach of the West Indies “A” Team in 2006 and Assistant Coach of the West Indies Team in 2007. He presently holds the position of Director of Coaching at the Barbados Cricket Association.
The 45-year-old Springer said he was pleased to be part of the team and is looking to help with the development of the players. He was been part of the week-long camp in Barbados this week and said the players have looked eager and enthusiastic.
“It is always an honour to represent the West Indies in any capacity and I am looking forward to the assignment. This is another chance for me to help with the development of West Indies cricket,” Springer said.
“The players have put in a lot of hard work this week and I want to see them playing to their full potential. After we arrive in South Africa we have another two weeks before the start of the Tournament (ICC CT09) and that will give us more opportunities to get acclimatized and ready for the challenge ahead.”
The West Indies team arrived in South Africa on Monday where they will have a camp in the city of Potchefstroom until September 16. The team will then have warm-up matches against South Africa (September 18) and Sri Lanka (September 20).
The West Indies are drawn alongside Pakistan, Australia and India in Group A of the Champions Trophy and all the Windies matches will be played at The Wanderers in Johannesburg. In the first round: vs Pakistan (September 23), vs Australia (September 26), vs India (September 30).
