Nero bats through the innings to lead Vincentians to 156-6

Kingstown, St Vincent: Juliana Nero made a brilliant 85 not out as St Vincent and the Grenadines posted a challenging 156-6 off their 50 overs against Trinidad and Tobago in the final of the West Indies Cricket Board’s Women’s 50-Over League at Arnos Vale Playing Field 1, on Wednesday.

Nero, who opened the batting and hit the first ball of the match for a boundary, held the innings together. She started well and slowed in the middle over, but played some powerful strokes at the end of the innings too boost the rate after the Trinidad and Tobago problems created problems. The experienced right-hander faced 137 balls and hit six fours. She added 49 for the fourth wicket with allrounder Melissa Bellingy, who again showed her value to the team a run-a-ball 20.

Anisa Mohammed, the captain and West Indies player, had the amazing figures of two wickets for 10 runs from 10 overs with her off-spin which confused the Vincentian batters. She accounted for Clea Hoyte and captain Cordel Jack were both caught in the leg-side by Gaitri Seetahal. Mohammed also held a superb diving catch to send back Bellingy off the bowling Shenelle Lord.

In the third place play-off at Stubbs, Jamaica were bowled out for 120 off 41.2 overs by Barbados, with fast bowler and captain Shakera Selman taking three wickets for four runs. In the fifth place play-off at Arnos Vale Playing Field 2, Shemaine Campbell hit a superb 100 not out to lead Guyana to the day’s highest score of 192-6 off 50 overs against St Lucia. In the seventh place play-off, Dominica fell for 93 from 46.2 overs against Grenada at Victoria Park.
