Amazing Pollard makes all the difference as Guyana go down to Mumbai
Durban, South Africa: Kieron Pollard blasted the Mumbai Indians to a 31-run victory over Guyana in their Airtel Champions League T20 match at Kingsmead, Durban on Thursday evening. In the process they kept alive their hopes of reaching the semi-finals and their winning margin in this match could be significant if qualification comes down to run rate.Pollard, the Trinidad and Tobago and Windies power-hitter smashed his way to 72 off 30 balls – including nine massive sixes – and that made the big difference in the end.
He was responsible for the Mumbai Indians scoring 40 runs in their last two overs. Pollard came in one-down after skipper Sachin Tendulkar (48) and Shikhar Dhawan (39) added 82 for the first wicket in 10 overs. The last 10 overs yielded 100 runs as Pollard went on a six-hitting spree. For Guyana, the best bowler was leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo, who took 3-34 from his four overs.Among his wickets was the prized scalp of Tendulkar who was stumped by keeper Derwin Christian.
Guyana, batting second, were level with Mumbai right up to the 18th over but they lacked the firepower that Pollard produced. The innings was put on track by a classy 46 from 38 balls by skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan. Allrounder Chris Barnwell continued to do the job in the middle-order, with 24 off 15 balls, but he fell at a crucial stage.
The Guyanese still have two matches to play against the Highveld Lions on Sunday and the South Australian Redbacks next Tuesday both at the Wanderers Stadium and still have an outside chance of semi-final qualification.
