Jason Mohammed named in Trini squad for WICB One-Day Tourney

Port-of-Spain: Trinidad and Tobago have named a strong team for the upcoming West Indies Cricket Board's 50-Over Tournament, to be played in Jamaica from October 14 to 24. The defending champions will again be led by experienced batsman Daren Ganga and the squad also includes star allrounders Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard as well as Adrian Barath, Darren Bravo, Lendl Simmons, Denesh Ramdin and Ravi Rampaul.

Former West Indies Under-19 batsman Jason Mohammed has forced his way into the team mainly due to some impressive performances in the recent trial matches. Rookie fast bowler Kevon Cooper has also earned a call-up.

Head of the Trinidad and Tobago selection panel Dudnath Ramkessoon gave his assessment: “Jason Mohammed batted well and maintained his form in the trial matches. We knew his potential from an early age and it was good to see him performing again. We saw a confident Jason Mohammed in trials and there was greater purpose and maturity in his batting. He is a young man and his mental strength showed after he lost his spot on the national team and has rebounded to reclaim it” Ramkessoon said.

“This team is very strong on paper but we need to watch and see if they can get it done. We had the strongest team in the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament but we did not win. Once we play to the best of our ability, we have the squad that can do it” said the former national player.

Pacer Ravi Rampaul has been included after recovering from a side strain incurred while playing in the Digicel Test series against South Africa earlier this year. “Ravi came into training and bowled well. There will be a few practice matches before the team leaves for Jamaica so he will be ready heading into the tournament” said Ramkessoon.

Trinidad and Tobago have been drawn alongside Jamaica, Windward Islands and Combined Campuses and Colleges in Group A. Their opening match will be against CCC on at Chedwin Park on October 14.
