Antigua and Barbuda win again in Leewards Tourney
The Valley, Anguilla - Antigua and Barbuda beat Anguilla by 71 runs to maintain their unbeaten record in the NAGICO-sponsored Leeward Islands 50-Over Tournament in the recent round of matches.
The Antiguans made 295-7 from their 50 overs thanks to Wilden Cornwall (70 not out off 49 balls), Rahkeem Cornwall (61) and Kadeem Phillip (60 with six sixes). Then, off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall then grabbed 3-23 to limit the home team to 224-8 despite unbeaten knocks of 43 from Kelbert Walters and Rondel Lake.
Anguilla were off to a poor start when they lost opener Chesney Hughes for a “duck” off the first ball of the innings, and they continued to lose wickets at regular intervals as the Antiguans took control of the game. Former West Indies allrounder Omari Banks chipped in with 37 while Jahmar Hamilton struck 32 but it was not enough to save Anguilla.
In the other match, home team St Maarten edged out St Kitts by two runs off the least ball in a cliffhanger. Leeward Islands batsman Steve Liburd made a blazing 62 but it was not enough to lead his team to a much-needed victory.
