Windies girls start work in India

Mumbai, India – The members of the West Indies Women’s team have been settling in comfortably ahead of the start of the nine-match tour.

They had a training session on Tuesday and are preparing for their opening match against the Board for Cricket Control in India on Saturday. The Windies are confident of doing well on this trip and captain Merissa Aguilleira outlined the team’s desire to get the better of India and also make strides up the ICC rankings tables. Coach Sherwin Campbell shared a similar view and he too is confident the girls have what it takes to be the best in the world.

“The ultimate goal is being the Number 1 team in the world in two forms of the game that we play at the moment – Twenty20 and 50-overs. We want to beat everyone at this level. I think that is our aim now. I think the girls have made huge progress. To beat England, the world champions in a One-Day series and a T20 series in just a year-and-a-half together, that’s really a big achievement,” Campbell said.

“England is an established team, which has been playing women’s cricket for quite a while. They are one of the most senior teams and to beat them, a champion team, at this early stage, it is really a big step forward for West Indies women’s cricket.”

Apart from beating England the Windies also reached the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup in the Caribbean in May. They then won the T20 title at the ICC Challenge Tournament in South Africa in October.
The Captain said the team has momentum and will be looking to get the better of the Indians when they meet in five One-Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals.

“We are looking ahead to this tour in a major way. We have a lot of confidence from the way we have been playing in the last 18 months and we have the belief we can do some big things on this tour. Spin will be a big factor on this tour, but our batters are fully equipped to handle what India have to throw at us,” Aguilleira said.
