Leewards and Windwards all set
St John’s, Antigua – The players from the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands will get some much-needed preparation ahead of the West Indies Cricket Board’s Caribbean T20.
The two sides will clash in a warm-up match at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds on Thursday afternoon. Ahead of the match, the two captains Darren Sammy of the Windwards and Wilden Cornwall of the Leewards spoke about their changes in the tournament.
“We're preparing properly and we really want to make a huge impact in the tournament. The attitude of the players has been very good and the work-ethic so far has been great. We are quietly confident of doing well,” Sammy said.
The 27-year-old allrounder added: “We came here [to Antigua] early to get some proper preparation and have a good look at all of our players ... we want to get the right combination I place when we start.”
The Windwards will face Caribbean Campuses & Colleges in the Group A tournament-opener on Monday at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium at 4 pm (3 pm Jamaica Time). The Leewards also fancy their chances and Cornwall said his players will be giving their all. They recently had trial matches and all match-ready. Their first match in Group B will be on Tuesday against Barbados at 8 pm (7 pm Jamaica Time).
"We want to start on the right foot. We want to get off to a winning start. When the 11th comes we will put on a show for our people here in Antigua,” the 37-year-old Cornwall said.
“We have been planning really well and we have been looking at clippings [footage] as we try to get better. We are focused and we see this as a very important tournament. We want to be there at the end in the final. We are planning properly and looking forward to the big league.”
