Hughes stars in CT20 warm-up win

St John’s Antigua – Superb batting by Chesney Hughes and Montcin Hodge led the Leeward Islands to a comfortable victory over the Windward Islands in their Caribbean T20 warm-up match on Thursday night.

The pair added 122 for the second wicket as the Leewards made 172-4 off their 20 overs, batting first at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground. The Windwards were bowled out for 135 off 18.1 overs to lose by 37 runs.

Hughes, the big left-hander, hit four sixes and six boundaries in a magnificent 86 off just 54 balls. Hodge, the compact right-handed opener, made 58 off 45 balls with five boundaries and a six.

In the second half, the Windwards got off to a “flyer” reaching 50 off just four overs. Devon Smith (38) and Andre Fletcher (41), added 50 for the second wicket but they could not maintain the tempo. New ball bowlers Kelbert Walters (2-26) and Lionel Baker (2-27) were the best for the Leewards.

The two teams will have another warm-up match on Friday evening as they prepare for the West Indies Cricket Board’s Caribbean T20. The The Windwards will face Caribbean Campuses & Colleges in the Group A tournament-opener on Monday at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium at 4 pm (3 pm Jamaica Time). The Leewards will have their first match in Group B on Tuesday against Barbados at 8 pm (7 pm Jamaica Time).
