Smartt, Mohammed bowl girls to T20 win

Ahmedabad, India – Steady bowling spell from Tremayne Smartt and Anisa Mohammed helped West Indies Women level their three-match Twenty20 International series with India Women.

In a tense finish at the Sardar Patel Stadium, the Windies beat the Indians by three runs on Sunday. The result means the three-match series is now tied 1-1 and they two sides will go at it again on Monday in what will be the series-decider.

Smartt, the hard-working seamer from Guyana, was the best of the Windies bowlers with 3 wickets for 9 runs from three overs, while Mohammed, the world-rated off-spinner, had 2 for 17 from four overs, as India Women were restricted to 104 for 8 from their allocation of 20 overs. The Windies replied with 107 for 7 from their 20 overs.

Opener Juliana Nero gave the innings a solid start with 44 from 45 balls with seven boundaries. Stafanie Taylor made an assured 21 and helped Nero to add 54 for the second wicket, after Deandra Dottin was dismissed for a “duck”.

However, the rest of Windies batting was restricted by the leg-spin of Priyanka Roy, who captured 4 for 19 runs.
