Gayle on fire as Windies off to flyer
Colombo, Sri Lanka – Chris Gayle blasted a superb 58 off 38 balls to get the West Indies off to a flying start.
The Windies won the toss and decided to bat first in their ICC Cricket World Cup warm-up match against Sri Lanka and Gayle was on song with his new 333 Special Edition bat.
Playing in a day/night match at the refurbished R Premadasa Stadium on Tuesday, Gayle hit eight boundaries and a massive six onto the top tier of the grand stand in an hour at the grease. He was bowled by ace spinner Muttiah Muralitharan trying to go for another maximum. At that stage the Windies reach 88/2 off 12 overs. The other wicket to fall up to that point was Devon Smith, without scoring.
The West Indies are using 11 players in the match while Sri Lanka are using their full 15 players. After this match the Windies will travel to India for their group phase of the tournament. They open their World Cup campaign against South Africa (February 24, Delhi) then followed by The Netherlands (February 28, Delhi), Bangladesh (March 4, Dhaka), Ireland (March 11, Mohali), England (March 17, Chennai), and India (March 20, Chennai).
