Bajans fightback after Permaul & Bishoo romp
PROVIDENCE, Guyana, CMC – Barbados staged a fight-back, after the spin duo of Veerasammy Permaul and Davendra Bishoo bowled Guyana to first innings points in the WICB Regional first-class championship on Sunday.
All-rounder Kevin Stoute finished the day with the flattering figures of two wickets for six runs from seven overs, as Guyana reached 90 for four in their second innings – for an overall lead of 218 – at the close on the third day of their fourth round match at the Guyana National Stadium.
Left-arm spinner Permaul had collected a career-best six for 60 from 30.5 overs, and leg-spinner Bishoo four for 61 from 25 overs, as Barbados were dismissed about 50 minutes after lunch for 202, replying to Guyana’s first innings total of 330.
Wicketkeeper/batsman Shane Dowrich led the way with 76, and Ryan Layne made 20 to add some beef to the visitors’ total.
Barbados gained an early scalp, when left-arm fast-medium bowler Pedro Collins had Guyana captain Assad Fudadin caught behind for 11by Dale Richards, deputising for Dowrich, who was suffering with cramps.
After Guyana reached 33 for one at tea, Jason Holder had Leon Johnson also caught behind for 21, which triggered a collapse that saw Guyana lose three wickets in quick succession.
Stoute then had Rajendra Chandrika also caught behind for 24, and Gajanand Singh was caught at cover off the same bowler to leave the home team on 65 for four.
Earlier, Barbados began the day on 88 for five, and immediately lost two wickets, with teenager Kraigg Braithwaite lbw to Permaul, and Roston Chase comprehensively bowled by Bishoo for 11, as the Barbadians slumped to 104 for seven.
Dowrich and Layne led a recovery to ensure their team did not fall below the follow-on target of 180.
Guyana used Bishoo and Permaul in tandem for most of the morning session before the lively Brendon Bess was brought back for the final half-hour before lunch.
Dowrich flicked Bess behind square for his fifth boundary to reach his maiden from 94 balls, as Barbados reached 178 for seven at lunch.
After the interval, Layne was lbw to Permaul without addition to the lunch time score. He added 74 for the eighth wicket with Dowrich.
Permaul then had Fidel Edwards lbw for a duck before missed a big swing at a delivery from the same bowler and was bowled.
The Guyanese entered the match seventh on the eight-team ladder, and the Barbadians were slightly ahead of their opponents in sixth place.
Guyana have not beaten Barbados in a regional first-class match on home soil, since their nine-wicket victory at Bourda Oval 27 years ago.
The home team’s only victory, since then against the visitors was at Kensington Oval in Barbados six years ago by six wickets.
