Barbados battle for a draw

PROVIDENCE, Guyana, CMC – Hamstrung by the loss of Devendra Bishoo, and a stoppage for rain, Guyana failed in their bid for a long-awaited victory over Barbados on home soil, and had to settle for a draw in the WICB Regional first-class championship on Monday.

Bishoo was called away to represent West Indies for the injured Dwayne Bravo at the World Cup, and his leg-spin bowling was sorely missed, as Barbados reached 87 for four in their second innings, after they were set 292 for victory, on the final day of their fourth round match at the Guyana National Stadium.
Guyana captain Assad Fudadin employed everyone that could bowl slow in his side, including himself, in an effort to undermine the Barbados batting, and fire the home team to their first victory this season.
But defiant batting from Kevin Stoute and Roston Chase saved the day for the Barbadians, after they wobbled to 49 for four.
The result earned Guyana six points and takes them to 13, and Barbados collect three points for the fourth time this season to move to 12.
Barbados stumbled early in their chase, when Dale Richards was caught at square-leg off Brandon Bess for 13, and Kyle Hope was bowled on the back-foot by Fudadin for six.
Barbados captain Ryan Hinds had easily his worst performance with the bat for the season, when he was lbw to left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul for three offering no stroke, and Kraigg Brathwaite was caught behind for 14 off Leon Johnson, bowling leg-spin.
Earlier, Guyana, starting the day on 90 for four, declared on 163 for nine about 50 minutes after lunch, following a stoppage for rain, which started about 25 minutes before lunch. Royston Crandon finished with the top score of 30.
Left-arm fast-medium bowler Pedro Collins captured three wickets for 41 runs from 18 overs, medium-pacer Stoute snapped-up three for 47 from 19 overs, and fast bowler Jason Holder took two for 14 from 11 overs.
The Championship takes a break next weekend, but resumes on March 11, when Barbados host Windward Islands at Kensington Oval, and Guyana welcome England Lions to this venue.
