Fidel takes 5-57 but LI bat deep
North Sound, Antigua – A face-saving century stand between Jahmar Hamilton and Sherwin Peters thwarted a rampant Barbados, as they hauled Leeward Islands back into contention on the first day of their sixth round clash of the WICB First-Class Tournament on Friday.
Hamilton struck an attractive 83 while Peters carved out a responsible 57 to pull the hosts around from a shaky position of 17-3 and guide them to 277 all out at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Friday.
West Indies pacer Fidel Edwards, who finished with 5-57 – his second five-wicket haul in two matches. Bowling with genuine pace on a slow pitch, he triggered the early slide while seamer Kevin Stoute (4-41) did the damage to the middle order.
Winning the toss and fielding, Barbados started brightly when Edwards trapped Shane Jeffers lbw for 2 and left-armer Pedro Collins sent back Gavin Williams, also lbw, for four with the score on 8-2. Edwards then breached Kerry Mentore’s defence to bowl him for seven with the score on 18-3.
Hamilton and Peters, both 20-year-olds, then came together in 138-run, fourth wicket stand to deny the Bajans.
Hamilton, the right-handed wicket-keeper, hammered 14 fours off 124 balls in three hours, while Peters faced 154 balls and struck seven fours in a knock spanning four hours.
When Stoute claimed Peters at 155-3, the innings went into a tail-spin as six wickets tumbled for 40 runs to leave the Leewards 195-9.
However, Anthony Martin (42) and Kelbert Walters (28) combined in an 82-run last wicket partnership to frustrate the Barbadians again. Martin hit two fours in an innings requiring 66 balls and lasting 101 minutes while Walters stroked four fours in a knock coming off 76 balls.SCOREBOARD LEEWARDS 1st Innings S Jeffers lbw b Edwards 2 S Peters c and b Stoute 57 G Williams lbw b Collins 4 K Mentore b Edwards 7 +J Hamilton c wkp Dowrich b Stoute 83 *S Liburd c wkp Dowrich b Edwards 7 J Peters c Carter b Stoute 15 J Athanaze c Carter b Stoute 3 L Baker b Edwards 2 K Walters c wkp b Edwards 28 A Martin not out 42 Extras (b4, lb11, w4, nb8) 27 TOTAL (all out, 88 overs) 277 Fall of wickets: 1-3, 2-8, 3-17, 4-155, 5-174, 6-184, 7-188, 8-193, 9-195, 10-277.
