Phillips leads CC&C to massive win

Cave Hill, Barbados – Combined Campuses & Colleges recorded a superb victory against Barbados to go top of the league table in the WICB First-Class Championship, on Sunday.

A champion innings by captain Omar Phillips piloted the students to 178-5, after being set 173 for victory in a low-scoring match at the 3Ws Oval. The five-wicket victory took CC&C to 57 points. It was the first defeat for Barbados, but they ended near the bottom of the table on 27 points.

CC&C have advanced to the semi-finals next weekend.

“It was a total team effort, not just in this match, but all season,” said Phillips. “We played well all season and we deserve our success. Winning here against Barbados in a match that was very important means a lot to the team.”

He added: “We are focussed and this is just one step. We still have the semi-final and we are looking to make the final and win everything this year.”

Phillips, the tall left-handed opener started the day on 15 not out and finished on 78 not out. He ended the match in grand style with a superb six into the pavilion. He also hit eight fours off 156 balls in 223 minutes at the crease. He never looked troubled by the Bajan attack, which lacked penetration.

Seamer Kevin Stoute was the best bowler on show. In an inspired spell from the North, he snapped up two quick wickets (2-19) as CCC slipped from the comfort of 66-1 to 84-4. His two wickets were rookie Shacoya Thomas (24) and veteran Floyd Reifer (7). In between Jason Holder had Kyle Corbin caught behind without scoring.

Phillips however batted with authority. He added 66 for the fifth wicket with Nkrummah Bonner, who was calm under pressure, and hit six boundaries in 32 off 66 balls.

After Bonner fell to a poor shot off leg-spinner Nikolai Charles, Carlos Brathwaite (13 not out) joined the captain and they batted well to win the match.

CCC left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh was named Man-of-the-Match for match figures of 11-72, including a career-best 7-22 in the first innings.
