Digicel Grassroots Cricketers enjoy cricket field trip
St John’s, Antigua– Dozens of Digicel Grassroots Cricketers in St Lucia got the rare opportunity to observe some of the finest cricketers on the world stage in action recently.
The young cricketers were present at the Mindoo Phillip Park as Pakistan played the Vice Chancellor’s XI in their warm up game prior to the start of the Digicel Series.
West Indies Vice Captain Dwayne Bravo and fast bowler Fidel Edwards appeared in the Vice Chancellor’s XI line up while several top Pakistan players featured in the match which was comfortably won by the visitors.
The students are from Grande Riviere and La Clery cluster groups and were extremely excited to get to watch Bravo and Edwards in action but also enjoyed the batting of Pakistan stand-in captain Mohammed Hafeez who struck a century and power hitting sensation Umar Akmal who made a blistering half century.
The students and their coaches usually train as a group on Saturdays but took the Monday off to enjoy the cricket field trip at St Lucia’s second premier cricketing venue after the Beausejour Cricket Grounds where the first two Digicel One Day Internationals will be played.
The Digicel Grassroots Cricket Training Programme is run across the Caribbean and caters to youngsters between the ages of 12 to 17 in two groups – Under 17 and Under 15 and is the main thrust of the overall Digicel Grassroots Cricket Programme which also includes the Grassroots Club Grant Initiative which provides up to US$5000 to clubs across the region for various cricket development activities.
