Hughes hits career-best for Derbyshire
Derby, England, CMC – Chesney Hughes stroked a career-best century to haul Derbyshire out of trouble on the third day of their County Championship Division Two match against Glamorgan.
The 20-year-old left-hander who plays for Anguilla and Leewrad Isalnds, hit an attractive 167 as the hosts finished the day on 380 for eight in their second innings, a lead of 295. Hughes, who got 38 in the first innings on the opening day, carved out 17 fours and four sixes to restore balance to the innings after Derbyshire had slipped to 22 for four.
Resuming the day on 15 for one, Derbyshire were quickly in trouble after seamer James Harris (4-82) snatched three quick wickets in 14 balls.
Hughes, however, then mounted three crucial partnerships which repaired the innings. He shared a stand of 154 for the fifth wicket with Dan Redfern (63), added another 58 with Greg Smith (38) for the sixth wicket before dominating a 115-run, seventh wicket partnership with Luke Sutton (45).
Dropped on 65 by Ben Wright off Harris, Hughes faced 272 balls and batted a shade under six hours before finally falling to Harris.
