Alleyne's class gives Bajans 305 lead

Georgetown, Guyana, CMC – Anthony Alleyne and Shane Parris stroked half-centuries to put Barbados within sight of victory against Windward Islands on the second day of their first round, WICB Regional Under-19 Championship match on Tuesday.

The left-handed Alleyne played some well-timed strokes in a typically attractive 79 while opener Parris got 60, as Barbados finished the day on 292 for eight in their second innings, an overall lead of 305 runs.

Earlier, the Windwards added only 11 runs to be dismissed for 148 and concede a first innings deficit of 13 runs. However, Barbados’ batting clicked the second time around thanks to Alleyne and Parris. Alleyne faced 138 balls and struck seven fours and two sixes while Parris also hit seven fours and two sixes in an innings spanning 85 balls and 113 minutes. Both batsmen anchored key partnerships to hold the innings together after Barbados lost two wickets cheaply at the top of the order.

Test batsman and captain Kraigg Brathwaite posted 48 for the first wicket with Parris before he was caught at short-leg off left-arm spinner Kavem Hodge (3-78) for 16. With just six runs added, Shai Hope was run out by Hodge’s direct hit from mid-on for four but Alleyne and Parris put on 51 for the third wicket.

When Parris edged a catch behind off off-spinner Jamaal James, Kyle Mayers (18) joined Alleyne to add a further 46 for the fourth wicket. Mayers, a West Indies Under-19 all-rounder, perished stumped off left-arm spinner Larry Edward but Alleyne and Justin Greaves (27) combined in yet another half-century stand, posting 55.

Both fell within 14 runs of each other to give the Windwards a look in but any hopes of a collapse were averted thanks to a 57-run, seventh wicket stand between Neil Browne (36) and Mario Rampersaud (34 not out).
