Zaman hits half century as Melville take Independence Cup- Wakenaam

Georgetown, Guyana - Zameer Zamaan stroked a fine half century as Melville defeated Belle Plaine by 1 wicket to the win the Independence 20-over softball cricket competition last Sunday at Sewram’s Tarmac in Belle Plaine Wakenaam.
Belle Plaine batted first and posted 185-6 off their allotted overs with Keval Chulai top scoring with 55 while Satrohan Shiwnanand supported with 50, Prem Shiwcharran contributed 40 and Satnarine Sahadeo 35. Gewan Persaud Snr and Zaman claimed two wickets each.
Melville responded with 186-9 in 17.5 overs with Zaman leading the way with 51. Jairam Ramadeen chipped in with 40 as Tamesh Persaud took 3-21 and Gunraj Kawal 3-30. Both teams received trophies while Sahadeo and Kawal collected the most outstanding batsman and bowler prizes respectively.
17-year-old Ganesh Mohabir of Rest of the Island and 11-year old Mahase Ramnarine of Good Success were given prizes compliments of Satnarine Singh for showing promise. The competition was sponsored by the Wakenaam NDC.
Meanwhile, Banks DIH Xtra White 5-over tournament will commence today at the said venue. The fixture in the preliminary round reads; Noitgedacht vs Rest of the Island, Good Success vs Melville, Zeelandia vs Maria’s Pleasure, Rest of the Island vs Belle Plaine, Melville vs Sarah, Maria’s Pleasure vs Sans Souci, Noitgedacht vs Belle Plaine, Good Success vs Sarah and Zeelandia vs Sans Souci.
The top three teams will go through to the finals which will be played on a round robin basis. The wining and runner teams will receive prizes while the man-of-the-match in the final, best bowler and batsman in the preliminary round will be rewarded along with the fielder taking the best catch, batsman hitting the biggest six, batsman hitting the most sixes and the most expensive bowler.
