Windwards lead after spinners rock T&T
GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Windward Islands gained an first innings lead, after spinners Ryan John and Gidron Pope rocked T&T’s batting in the Regional Under-19 Tournament on Tuesday here.
Tonis Simon was not out 30 and Kershaskie Jno Lewis was not out on four in a solid top-order response, as Windwards reached 91 for two in their first innings at the close on the opening day of their first round match at Enmore for a lead so far of 17.
Melvin Gordon made 32 and Pope followed up his steady spin bowling with 20 at the top of the order, as the Windwards finished satisfying day strongly.
Pope was the pick of the Windwards bowlers with 3-8 from 10 overs and John grabbed 3-14 from 10 overs, as they put the skids on T&T and bowled them out for a modest 74.
Doran Edwards was also part of the demolition job with 2-14 from 7.2 overs, as no
significant resistance came from the T&T batsmen.
T&T captain and opener Jeremy Solozano, a West Indies Under-19 batsman, led the way with 18, Jemeel Maniran got 12, Amir Jangoo 11 and Samuel Roopnarine 10.
Windwards wicketkeeper Anson Latchman distinguished himself, taking four catches behind the stumps to dismiss Jangoo, Brian Christmas for five, as well as Camillo Carimbocas and Tevin Jadoo for a duck each.
