Openers power SL in semi-finals

Colombo, Sri Lanka – Openers Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga powered Sri Lanka to a superb victory by 10 wickets over England in their ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 quarter-final.

Playing on Saturday at the R Premadasa Stadium, the right-handed Dilshan (108 not out) and the left-handed Tharanga (102 not out) both notched up their second centuries in the tournament and with it their second double-hundred opening partnership.

Castries, St Lucia – Windward Islands made early inroads into the Leeward Islands batting line-up on a rain-hit first day of their final round match in the WICB First-Class Championship on Friday.

Choosing to bowl first at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, the hosts reduced the Leewards to 62-5 at the close, after play started at 3:40 pm.

Early morning showers forced three inspections by umpires Goaland Greaves and Vivian Johnson before play got underway after tea, with 35 overs allocated for the day’s play.

Kingston, Jamaica – Jamaica produced a solid batting effort to make significant inroads into England Lions’ total, on the second day of their final round WICB First-Class Championship on Friday.

Chasing 358, the Jamaicans finished the day on 259 for four, only 99 runs adrift of first innings lead at Sabina Park. Opener Simon Jackson stroked 60, his partner Danza Hyatt got 59, the in-form Marlon Samuels scored 58 while Test left-hander Brendan Nash finished the day unbeaten 56.

Cave Hill, Barbados – Twenty-two wickets tumbled as fortunes fluctuated on a dramatic opening day of the final round WICB First-Class Championship match between Combined Campuses & Colleges and Barbados on Friday.

Winning the toss and batting first at the 3Ws Oval pitch, Barbados were bundled out for 90 with left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh grabbing a career-best 7-22 to be the chief destroyer.

Simmons hits ton to steady T&T

Georgetown, Guyana – Opener Lendl Simmons stroked his ninth first-class century as Trinidad and Tobago took command of their final round match in the WICB First Class Championship against Guyana on Friday.

The 26-year-old right-hander hit a fluent 134 not out as he propelled the visitors to 291-4 at the close of the opening day at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.
