Narine seals Emerging Player award

Colombo, Sri Lanka - Up-and-coming West Indies bowler Sunil Narine has been named as the Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2012 at the LG ICC Awards in Colombo.

The 24-year-old from Trinidad, follows in the footsteps of last year’s winner and fellow West Indies bowler, Devendra Bishoo, in claiming the award. The off-spinner played in three Tests for the West Indies claiming 12 wickets at an average 31.50, while in the 15 ODIs he played in he claimed 28 wickets at an average of 18.82.

Narine wants to win ICC Award

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, CMC – West Indies spin bowler Sunil Narine says he believes he has done enough to win the International Cricket Council’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year award which will be announced at the annual International Cricket Council’s Awards gala at the Water’s Edge at 4:30 pm (7 am Eastern Caribbean Time/6 am Jamaica Time).

Narine is on a short list that also includes New Zealand fast bowler Doug Bracewell, Sri Lankan top-order batsman Dinesh Chandimal, and James Pattinson, the Australian pacer.

Samuels ready to step-up for Windies

Colombo, Sri Lanka – Marlon Samuels believes he will have a key role to play in the West Indies team in the upcoming ICC World T20 tournament. The top-order batsman, who also bowls clever off-spin, is expected to be called upon with both bat and ball in the coming weeks as the Windies look to win the title for the first time.

“My role will be in every department – batting, bowling and fielding. I’m in good form with the bat. I did well in England and continued on against New Zealand. I have also been working hard in the nets and I feel ready,” Samuels said.

Lara, Bakewell join Hall of Fame

Colombo, Sri Lanka - The International Cricket Council today announced that Brian Lara and Enid Bakewell will be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame tomorrow evening at the LG ICC Awards 2012.

West Indies’ Lara becomes the 67th male member of the Hall of Fame, while England’s Bakewell becomes the third woman to be inducted. Lara and Bakewell will attend the LG ICC Awards tomorrow evening at the Waters Edge in Colombo. Two further inductees will be announced later in the year.

Gibson: We will learn from defeat

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, CMC – Head Coach Ottis Gibson has downplayed West Indies’ loss to Sri Lanka in their opening warm-up game ahead of the World Twenty20 Championship starting here next week.

The Caribbean side could only muster 132 for six off their 20 overs and Sri Lanka easily chased down the target courtesy of unbeaten half-centuries from Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan.
