Lunch Day 3: Windies lead by 204

Delhi, India -- Shivnarine Chanderpaul held the key to the West Indies’ second innings at lunch on the third day of the first Test match on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old was on 39 not out at the break as the Windies wobbled to 109-7. They lost five wickets in the morning session and the overall lead is 204 so far.

Chanderpaul, who hit a century in the first innings, and skipper Darren Sammy on eight not out were batting at the break with West Indies stretching their overall lead to 204 runs with three wickets in hand.

Sammy: Key is bowling straight

Delhi, India, CMC/IANS – West Indies captain Darren Sammy said Monday that bowling tight on a slow and low Feroz Shah Kotla track was the key for their success against the Indian batsmen.

India were bowled out for 209 runs in the first innings of the first Test and at stumps in response to West Indies’ 304 all out earlier.
At the close, West Indies were struggling on 21 for two – a lead of 116 – after a riveting second day’s play when 17 wickets fell.

Viru: Bad shots not bad pitch

Delhi, India -- In all, 17 wickets fell on day two of the first Test at the Feroze Shah Kotla, but Virender Sehwag put things in perspective when he said the pitch had no role to play in the rash of dismissals.

“A lot of them were called soft dismissals -- like Gautam’s run out, like my getting out,” the Indian opener said on Monday. “It’s not as if the wicket is bad. It’s a good wicket to bat on, maybe keeping a bit low. But nobody got out because of the wicket.”

LUNCH DAY 2: Ojha takes six

Delhi, India - Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha claimed six wickets as India bowled out West Indies for 304 runs and then raced to 39-0 at lunch on the second day of the first Test on Monday.

Ojha (6-72) added three more wickets to his overnight collection, while Ravichandran Ashwin (3-81) and Ishant Sharma (1-80) also struck as West Indies added only 48 runs to their tally before losing the bottom half of their batting order in 17.1 overs.

Gautam Gambhir (22) and Virender Sehwag (15) gave India a breezy start and could not be separated at the lunch break.
