Shiv gives 'thumbs up' to young brigade

New Delhi, India, CMC – Though charged up about scoring a milestone Test hundred, Shivnarine Chanderpaul said passing on the knowledge about batting to younger West Indies batsmen had become an important role for him.

The West Indies most capped player ever slammed his 24th Test hundred of an undefeated 111 to claw the visitors back into the first Test against India on Sunday, leading them to 256 for five at the close on the opening day.

Delhi, India - Shivnarine Chanderpaul played another superb innings for West Indies with an unbeaten century to power West Indies to 256-5 against India on the opening day of the first Test on Sunday.

The 37-year-old left-hander ended the day on 111 not out off 167 balls on a good batting surface at the Feroz Shah Kotla. He has so far hit seven fours and two sixes in his seventh century against India and 24th overall.

New Delhi, India – West Indies captain Darren Sammy won the toss and immediately chose to bat in the first Test against India at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium.

The Windies retained the opening combination of Kieran Powell and Kraigg Brathwaite while Adrian Barath missed out. Also missing out was Kemar Roach with Ravi Rampaul coming back into the fold.

Windies win toss, bat first

New Delhi, India -- West Indies captain Darren Sammy won the toss and decided to bat first in the opening match of the three-Test series at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium on Sunday. 

West Indies recalled fast bowler Ravi Rampaul to replace Kemar Roach from the team which won the series-clinching Test match against Bangladesh in Dhaka last week.

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and pace bowler Umesh Yadav were given their first Test caps.

Sammy: We have to play fearlessly

New Delhi, India, CMC/IANS – Darren Sammy promised that West Indies would display a “fearless” brand of cricket against a superior Indian side in the first of three Tests, beginning here on Sunday.

The West Indies captain said it was a challenge for his young team to play against India, who are currently ranked No.3 in the Test rankings.

“Playing in India is a big challenge for me as captain as well as the team,” said Sammy ahead of a practice session at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium on Saturday.
