WI get first taste of action
HOVE, England – West Indies reached 45 for two in their first innings before bad light stopped play, after they formally kicked off their tour of England against Sussex on Sunday.
Only 18 overs were possible in close to 80 minutes before the weather changed again, forcing the players to leave the field on the scheduled second day of the three-day, tour match at the PROBIZ County Ground.
The not out batsmen were Kieran Powell on 19 and fellow left-hander Darren Bravo on one.
Play on started 3 ¾ hours later than scheduled after overnight rain again drenched the ground, leaving a few areas soggy.
After West Indies were sent in to bat, opener Adrian Barath looked typically compact making 16 before he was bowled, when a delivery from Kirk Wernars ricocheted from his thigh pad and rolled back onto the stumps.
West Indies vice-captain Kirk Edwards was fortunate, when Luke Wells dropped him second ball, on nought, at second slip off Chris Liddle.
Edwards was just beginning to settle down, when he drove loosely at a wide delivery from the same bowler and was caught at third slip for eight before the weather took hold again.
The first day of the match was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
The match is the first of two warm-up matches for West Indies prior to the first Test against England, starting on May 17 at Lord’s.
