Welcome-Goodman blasts 85 not out as BDFSP march into quarter-finals of Sagicor T20

Bridgetown, Barbados - Marlon Welcome-Goodman blasted an unbeaten 85 as Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) marched into the quarter-finals of the BCA Sagicor General Twenty20 championship with a four-wicket win over YMPC at Beckles Road today.

With only two places among three contenders up for grabs in the last eight going in the ninth and final series of the Zone A preliminaries, BDFSP, then on 14 points, faced the toughest task of having to win.

The other contenders - YMPC and Guardian General Barbados Youth - were both on 16 points. Barbados Youth soon booked their place by picking up two points after rain prevented a ball from being bowled against BRC BCL at the Lester Vaughan ground, Cane Garden.

It meant that the match at Beckles Road was then a virtual 'knockout' and BDFSP landed the telling punch with eight balls to spare.

Chasing 144 to win, BDFSP were set up by left-handers Welcome-Goodman and Mario Rampersaud who added 71 in only 6.3 overs for the first wicket before Rampersaud fell for 23.

Welcome-Goodman tore into West Indies fast bowler Fidel Edwards, who conceded 33 runs off two overs including 20 in his second and did not bowl for the rest of the match.

A member of the champion Barbados Under-19 three-day team in the regional tournament last year, Welcome-Goodman's memorable knock came off only 46 balls and contained 16 threes and four fours.

Barbados wicket-keeper/batsman Shane Dowrich topscored with 52 not out off 36 balls, striking eight threes and two fours in YMPC's 132 for four after they were sent in.

Title holders Sagicor Life UWI beat Ince Transport MTW by 49 runs at 3Ws Oval to finish as the only team with a perfect winning record, while second-placed Republic Bank St. Catherine triumphed by 18 runs over Banks Wildey, who were penalised two overs for a slow over-rate after the match ended dramatically with the scores tied.

ZONE A - UWI 32, St. Catherine 24, Barbados Youth 18, BDFSP 18, YMPC 16, Carlton 12, MTW 10, Banks Wildey 8, BCL 6.

ZONE B - Empire 20, Maple 20, LIME 16, Spartan 16, Pickwick 14, Yorkshire 14, Wanderers 8, Police 4.
