Washington is St James' trump card

Jamaica Gleaner article.

KINGSTON, JAMAICA - St James will be hard-pressed to knock off a strong Westmoreland side in today's second-round western zone Jamaica Cricket Association All-Island Limited Overs Competition, but head coach Cecil Fletcher believes it can be done if former West Indies pacer Dwight Washington has a good day with the ball.

"He (Washington) is our trump card. A very experienced bowler and he is no mug with the bat either, so am expecting a competitive match," said Fletcher. "We did not execute well in our first match against Hanover but we have reviewed that match and are sure to do better against Westmoreland."

Led by medium/fast bowler Andrew Walker, St James will travel to Little London, Westmoreland in hope of registering their first win of the competition after giving up miserably in a seven-wicket loss to Hanover last week.

Former Jamaica and West Indies right-arm fast bowler Washington is being tipped by Walker to deliver the goods against the likes of Westmoreland captain Jamaal Lewis and top batsman opener Nick Blackwood.

Washington, who represented the senior Windies team in one Test match, will use all his experience in leading the bowling for St James that also include leg-spinner Chris Watson and Walker, who while failing to pick up a wicket in the last match, says he is feeling in good condition to create problems for the opposition batsmen.

"With Dwight, who is a known quantity in terms of his ability with bat and ball, me and Chris, we will be fine," said Walker.

"Dalton James, our opener is in fine touch, also Chocon Chambers, I see us defeating Westmoreland," he said.

Meanwhile, Hanover will back themselves for win number when they square off against Trelawny in the day's other match at Elgin Town.
