UWI defeats Empire by five wickets

Bridgetown, Barbados - Sagicor UWI got its title defence of the Barbados Cricket Association’s Sagicor General Super Cup off to a winning start with a five-wicket win over ICBL Empire on Saturday.
Playing at the 3W’s Oval, the home side was led by Raymon Reifer, who ended on 60 not out as UWI easily surpassed Empire’s meager total of 114 to end on 118-5 in 23 overs.
The match began at 1:30 p.m. instead of 9:30 a.m. after a damp pitch postponed the start of play and the match was reduced to 26 overs a side.
It was just one of three matches to be completed on Saturday as the heavy rains the island experienced on Friday left many outfields soggy and unsuitable for play.
Empire was asked to bat after losing the toss and captain Jason Haynes and Jonathan Drakes both made 25, while Kevin Stoute made 15 as they ended on 114-7.
UWI recovered from 19-2 to cruise to 118-5 in 23 overs thanks to Reifer’s knock. His 60 runs came off 67 deliveries and included two boundaries and two sixes.
In another 26-over match over at Dayrell’s Road, YMPC beat neighbours Counterpoint Wanderers by 11 runs. YMPC batted first and made 204-3 with Dwayne Smith leading the way with 77 from just 48 balls, which included six sixes and four boundaries.
Steven Blackett scored 51 from 58 balls, while Christopher Jordan scored 36 and Shane Dowrich 35 not out.
Despite an unchar-acteristically quick-fire 92 off 66 balls by the usually sedate Kraigg Brathwaite, Wanderers were restricted to 193-5 in their 26 overs, falling 11 runs short of the target.
The other match completed on Saturday saw Carlton defeat Banks Wildey by 59 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method at the Desmond Haynes Oval.
Carlton made 129-7 in 26 overs with Kirk Gibson scoring 55 and Shayne Moseley 47, and then restricted Banks to 129-7 in 25 overs with Alex Bridgeman taking 2-15 and Dario Vaughan 2-27.
