Unbeaten St Lucia crowned champions after pounding SVG


CASTRIES, St Lucia – St Lucia registered their fifth straight win as they used another strong batting display to crush St Vincent and the Grenadines by 126 runs, and clinch the Windward Islands Under-15 title here Saturday.

Playing in their penultimate match of the tournament at the Beauchamp Playing Field, south of here, St Lucia opted to bat first after winning the toss, and piled up 220 for eight off their 50 overs.

Captain Johnnel Eugene maintained his good run of form to top score with 40 while Jard Goodman and Kimani Melius both stroked 39. Lerry Auguste added a useful 19 to the total.

Off spinner Reynoldson Hillocks had the best returns for SVG with four for 42, and was supported by opening bowler Urnel Thomas, who captured two for 42.

With their batting struggling all tournament, the Vincentians offered little resistance and folded for 94 off 27.3 overs, to crash to their fifth successive defeat of the double round robin competition.

Three of their batsmen got to double figures but none passed 20. Roshourn John top scored with 18, Urnel Thomas hit 14 and Alex Samuel scored 11.

Twelve-year-old Simeon Gerson finished with three for three to lead St Lucia’s attack with Eugene backing up his batting with two for 19. Shakym Scott claimed two for 20 and Ned Modeste, two for 38.

The St Lucians are up against Grenada at the Mindoo Philip Park on Sunday and are aiming to maintain their unbeaten run while the Vincentians come up against former champions Dominica at the Dennery Playing Field.
