Two local groundsmen die following battles with illness

Bridgetown, Barbados - Two well-known local groundsmen, Richard Applewaite and Theo Bascombe, co-incidentally both died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Thursday, April 3, after battles with illness for some time.

Applewaite worked at the famous Empire Club in Bank Hall for many years and was also employed for first-class and international matches at Kensington Oval.

Affectionately called "Apple", he also represented Empire in football and hockey.

Bascombe worked at several clubs and schools including Wanderers, Barbados Cricket League, Foundation, Garrison (now Graydon Sealy), St. Michael and the Barbados Community College. He was also a handy cricketer.

Both Applewaite and Bascombe were in their 50s.
