T&T send Leewards plummeting to earth

Port of Spain, Trinidad - Hosts Trinidad & Tobago sent the Leeward Islands plummeting back to earth in just one session on the night of Day 2.

Up until now, the Leewards have enjoyed a bit of revival from their poor performances in previous seasons. A win against the Combined Campuses & Colleges in Round 1 and a near defeat against Jamaica in Round 2 raised hopes for the islanders.

However, after Akeal Hosein and Stephen Katwaroo batted out the first two sessions of Day 2, it seemed to knock the wind out of the visitors, who finished the day clinging on at 86/9.

T&T's youths, Hosein and Katwaroo, added 195 runs on Day 2 before Katwaroo was the last man to out for T&T as the hosts declared at Tea on 458/7.

Up until then, the wicket seemed unchanged from the batting paradise it looked like for the first five sessions of this match, or perhaps the Leewards weren't bowling right.

Within the first ten overs, the Leewards were three wickets down with 35 runs on the board. One run later and they lost another two wickets, reeling at 36/5. It only got worst as the night wore on.

Tonito Willett followed back three runs later. Jahmar Hamilton was the lone fighter in the team, counter-attacking the T&T spin with cuts and pulls for four. At the other end though, wickets were walking in and out.

Gabriel had removed three Leewards batsmen while Emrit had taken two wickets. T&T were outstanding in the field to back up their bowlers. Jason Mohammed ran out Sylvester Joseph with an accurate throw from mid-on, while Imran Khan snatched a blinder at backward-point, diving full-length to his left to remove Mali Richards.

T&T smelled blood, and they were ruthless. Their roar may have been much owed to the platform that Hosein and Katwaroo set earlier in the day, and dare say, was outshined in the final session.

However, T&T started Day 2 in an uncertain position at 263/6. Had they lost early wickets, who knows what would have happened? But that wasn't the case. Instead, the two T&T youngsters batted solidly and took no risks. They safely negotiated the first hour without much alarms.

Together, they grew stronger as pair, talking to each other and frequently turning over the strike. They saw out Dinner and continued to bat solidly for much of the second session. Both batsmen past 50 and seemed focus to continue on for as long they liked.

Close to tea, Hosein brought up his maiden First Class ton and following right behind was Katwaroo. But it wasn't to be. On 91, he played down the wrong line and was adjudged Leg Before Wicket off Justin Athanaze. He looked to the heavens, as the agony hit him.

He had played brilliantly though, hitting nine boundaries in his 202-ball knock. Hosein hit the same number of boundaries, but he got to his century. He finished on 102 not out. Both batsmen put on 197 runs together, a figure that could well become T&T's margin of victory.
