T&T beat Windwards as batsmen struggle

SCARBOROUGH, Tobago - Round 2 of the WICB Tobago House of Assembly Regional Under 17 Tournament completed today across three venues on the island of Tobago.

Following are the reports on all three matches:

Akeil Greenidge and Nicholas Kirton both struck half centuries as Barbados piled on the pressure on Guyana in the 2013 WICB/THA Regional Under 17 Tournament. Having been sent in, Greenidge came to the came after the early loss of Lee Germon-Gaskin.

He belted eight fours and one six in his knock of 84, sharing in a 59 run partnership with Kyle Hinckson along the way. Greenidge's knock lasted 106 minutes and he faced 84 balls. When he was out with the Barbados score on 150/4, the good start threatened to go to waste. However, Nicholas Kirton stepped up at the back end of the innings, stroking the same number of boundaries as Greenidge in his knock of 70. His strike rate was better though, scoring his runs in just 63 balls. He also ended unbeaten.

Barbados enjoyed the better of the first half of the match, finishing their 50 overs on 278/6. Travis Persaud (10-0-35-2) and Brandon Prasad (5-0-36-2) were Guyana's best bowlers.

Guyana's chase never got going as they lost wickets at regular intervals. The pressure of the scoreboard got to the batsmen as Barbados were presented with easy chances in the field. Sherfane Rutherford battled with a patient 28 while Persaud was the second highest Guyanese scorer with 25.

Barbados, led by Deswin Currency (10-2-17-3) were too good though, skittling Guyana out for just 126 in 37.5 overs, going on to record a comprehensive 152 run victory.

The Leeward Islands suffered their second loss in as many matches in Round 2 of the WICB/THA Regional Under 17 Tournament. After being sent in to bat at Bon Accord by Jamaica, the Leewards endured an early setback, being reduced to 21/2 in only the fifth over.

Saeed Williams and Kasey Carty came together in an 86 run partnership that would save the Leewards from a middle order collapse. Wiliams hit 44 runs from 95 balls in a knock that included four boundaries. Casey hit one less boundary in his score of 43 from 69 balls.

But once the partnership was broken by Lenardo Salmon, the rest of the Leewards' batting line withered away. From 107/2, Jamaica forced a collapse that would see the combined islands fall away to 151 all out. Gareth Henry, Salmon and Abhijam Mansingh all finished with three wickets.

Jamaica's chase was led by opener Saad Ahmad, who pommeled the Leewards bowling to all parts of the ground. Ahmad led the way with an unbeaten 71 from 138 balls that included three fours and a six. There small contributions from Rajon Nicholason (18), Denniel Griffith (21) and Mansingh (12).

Jamaica got to their target in 44.3 overs. Miral Wadhwa finished with figures of 10-2-33-2.

Carl Vialva led a spirited Trinidad & Tobago response that stunned the Windward Islands and shattered their hopes of a second straight win in the second round of the WICB/THA Regional Under 17 Tournament.

T&T won the toss and elected to bat at Louis D'or but struggled to put partnerships together throughout the innings. Jyd Goolie was the only real mainstay of the T&T innings, hitting an aggressive 61 that contained 6 fours and three sixes. Anderson Phillip helped end off the innings on a high, cracking 20 from 17 balls, hitting a six and a four.

But T&T's score of 215/9 from their 50 overs didn't look enough when Gidron Pope and Christian Charlery got going. It looked like Kershaski Jnolewis (10-0-45-3) and Daryl Cyrus (7-0-31-2) had done enough.

After losing Kyle Cabey early on, Pope and Charlery put on 102 runs for the second wicket to lead the Windwards' response. However, after a short rain break, things swung T&T's way. Vialva (10-1-48-4) led the charge as the Windwards slowly crumbled.

Jnolewis tried to make a last dash attempt for victory with 21 runs from 24 balls, but his effort was invain. T&T scraped by in a game they had largely spent all day chasing.
