Bridgetown, Barbados - In a match of twists and turns, St. Leonard's Old Scholars kept their nerves to defeat newcomers Grantley Adams Old Scholars by two wickets with nine balls remaining in the sixth annual Christ Church Foundation School Joel Garner Twenty20 tapeball tournament at Dover on Wednesday night.
Chasing 122 to win in the Barry Gaskin/Bran Williams Zone 'D' encounter, St. Leonard's lost two early wickets, then recovered through a third wicket partnership of 50 on 7.1 overs between captain Akeem Springer and Jamel Harewood.
But once Springer was bowled by Vitaly Wilkinson for 33, which came off 30 balls including five fours and earned him the $100 Baron's Smokehouse Player-of-the-Match, Grantley Adams fought back, and at 115 for eight in the 18th over, it was still a lottery.
But the Richmond Gap men were given great relief when Jarvis Forde drove the third ball of the 19th over from Rodney Gittens to the cover boundary to spark celebrations.
Wilkinson, who threatened to run through the innings, finished with four for 24 off four overs.
The result was a major disappointment for Grantley Adams as one of their top players, Kelvin Patterson, chokingly revealed at the presentation ceremony.
The burly Patterson, who has played at the highest level of local domestic club cricket for LIME and is also a well-known basketballer, impressed with the bat after Grantley Adams were sent in.
Striking the ball hard and clean, he made 38 off 29 balls with three sixes and three fours to help set the stage for what should have been a total at least 150.
Kevin Greene contributed 24 as Grantley Adams scored at roughly eight runs an over in the first ten overs despite losing former Barbados and West Indies batsman Dale Richards for ten, caught at the wicket by Andre Roach as he cut at pacer Lemar Marshall in the second over of the match.
They were 101 for four in the 14th over before Patterson's dismissal, bowled by Forde, triggered a collapse. The last six wickets tumbled for 20 runs in 4.1 overs including former Barbados all-rounder Antonio Mayers for nine as spinners Ravendra Persaud and Omar Marshall wreaked havoc and they were bowled out for 121 in 17.3 overs.
Left-armer Persaud and off-spinner Marshall both took three for 16, while Forde picked up two for 21.
There will be a double-header at Dover on Friday, January 31. Foundation 'B' Old Scholars oppose Lodge Old Scholars in the Barry Gaskin/Bran Williams Zone at 6.30 p.m. and former champion teams - Deighton Griffith Old Scholars (2012) and Coleridge & Parry (2011) clash in the Irvine King/Hugh Barker Zone 'C' at 9.30 p.m.
Grantley Adams Old Scholars 121 all out (17.3 overs) (Kelvin Patterson 38, Kevin Greene 24, Vataly Wilkinson 13, Dale Richards 10; Ravendra Persaud 3-16, Omar Marshall 3-16, Jarvis Forde 2-21).
St. Leonard's Old Scholars 122-8 (18.3 overs) (Akeem Springer 33, Stephen Payne 19, Omar Marshall 10; Vataly Wilkinson 4-24).
